Feeling Homesick in Your First Year: How to Cope and Thrive

Starting university is an exciting new chapter, but it can also be challenging, especially if you’re feeling homesick. It’s perfectly normal to miss home and your family during your first few months. Here are some strategies to help ease the transition and make the most of your time at Queen’s!

1. Create a Routine Establishing a daily routine can help you feel more grounded. Try to wake up and go to bed at consistent times and set aside time to eat and study. This structure will provide a sense of normalcy and help you settle into your new environment.

2. Stay Connected, But Don’t Overdo It While keeping in touch with loved ones is important, constantly focusing on what you’re missing can make it harder to adjust. Schedule regular catch-ups with family and friends but be mindful not to spend all your time on video calls. Balance staying connected with being present here on campus.

3. Get Involved Join clubs, attend events, or participate in activities that interest you. Meeting people with similar hobbies or goals will help you build a support network and feel more at home. It’s also a great way to combat loneliness and immerse yourself in campus life.

4. Practice Self-Care Homesickness can be emotionally draining, so it’s crucial to prioritize your well-being. Get in movement, eat balanced meals, and get plenty of sleep. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our Peer Wellness Coaches to help you get on track if you need help!

Remember, it’s okay to feel homesick—it’s a natural part of adjusting to university life. With time and a few positive steps, you’ll soon feel more comfortable and confident in your new home.
