How to Manage Midterm Stress

BeWellAdmin

Ready or not, midterm season is officially here, and so is the stress that comes with it. While a certain level of stress and adrenaline is a great motivator for accomplishing your goals and working hard, it shouldn't be impacting your health and wellness. That's why it's important to start considering healthy strategies for managing your stress levels early on and achieving a work-life balance your body and grades will thank you for later.

Study Strategies

  1. Avoid cramming - Rather than leaving all of your work to the last minute, take the time to map out a study plan for the coming weeks that you can manage and that will help you succeed on your midterms.

  2. Be Consistent - Experimenting with new and unique strategies is great, but an exam season usually isn't the best time for new tricks. Stick to what you know works for you and aim to make steady progress daily.

  3. Go Easy on Yourself - Exam season is stressful enough as it is, and being critical of yourself won't make it any easier. Instead of feeling guilty or frustrated when things don't go as planned, ask yourself what steps you can take now to make things better - and discard everything else that's not within your control!

  4. Determine Major Priorities - Choose study priorities based on the day exams occur, their difficulty level, grade value, and how well you feel you know the material.

  5. Brain Dump - Sometimes, the main cause of our stress is simply mental overload. To help offset some of the weight you may be carrying, do a brain dump in a journal of all the things you're worried about and leave your worries at the door when it comes time to write your midterms.

  6. Ask for Help - Attend help sessions with your professors and TA's, make study groups with other people in your courses, and seek support from friends and family when you need it.
