Understanding how to prevent influenza and recognizing its symptoms are essential steps in maintaining a healthy and productive academic environment. Let's review them together:
Prevention Strategies
Immunization — It is strongly advised that regardless of age or health status, individuals prioritize getting their flu shot this fall. Book a spot at one of our campus Flu and/or COVID vaccine clinics, or reach out to your local pharmacy for other arrangements while spots remain!
Practice Hand Hygiene — Regularly washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer can significantly reduce the spread of germs and viruses, including influenza.
Cough and Sneeze into Elbow — Covering your mouth and nose with your elbow instead of your hands when coughing or sneezing helps prevent respiratory droplets from contaminating surfaces and spreading illness.
Regularly Disinfect High-Touch Surfaces — Frequently cleaning surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, and shared electronics, minimizes the risk of flu transmission in communal living and learning environments.
Common Symptoms — Symptomatic individuals should stay home when they feel unwell. Symptoms may include:
Fever (greater than 38⁰C/100.4⁰F)
Cough or chills
Headache or muscle aches
Loss of appetite
Nausea or vomiting (mainly exhibited in young children)
Sore throat
Runny nose
As we navigate the challenges of staying healthy together this respiratory season, getting vaccinated is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and others from influenza and COVID-19 — So make sure to book your appointment at one of our Flu and/or COVID vaccine clinics while they're still available.
Don't wait until it's too late—secure your appointment ASAP. Your future self will thank you!
