How to Stay Active Without the Gym This Summer

I’ll be honest — once summer hits, my motivation to hit the gym drops fast. Between the heat, travel plans, and general “I deserve to chill” vibes, it gets easy to let movement slide.
But recently, I've been reminded that staying active doesn’t have to mean lifting weights, hopping on a treadmill or breaking the budget. In fact, some of my best summer days now are the workouts I create without ever stepping inside a gym! So, here’s how you can keep your body moving this summer, no gym membership (or guilt) required:

1. Turn “Hanging Out” into Active Time - Instead of meeting friends for food or a movie every time, suggest:
A walk-and-talk through a local trail
A pickup game of volleyball, basketball, or soccer (check out how to borrow campus rec equipment!)
Exploring new areas of town by bike or foot
It counts. And it’s fun.
2. Try a Mini Movement Break - When I’m feeling sluggish or stuck indoors, I’ll throw on a 10-minute YouTube yoga session or do a dance break in my room (no shame). A little bit of movement goes a long way for your mood and energy.
Need a routine? The Empower Me online program has quick movement videos and playlists, no equipment needed— and it's totally FREE for Queen's students!

3. Make Nature Your Gym - Use what’s around you:
Park bench = step-ups and tricep dips
Stairs = quick cardio boost
Trail = walking meditation or jogging loop
Even a slow walk in the sun helps your body and your brain recharge.
4. Join a Rec League or Drop-In Session - Queen’s Athletics & Recreation offers tons of low-commitment fitness and rec options. Whether you’re into karate, archery, or going for a quick run, there’s something casual and low-pressure to try.
5. Most Importantly: Make It Something You Enjoy - Summer movement should feel good, not like a chore. Whether it’s rollerblading, swimming at the beach, or dancing around your room, it all counts. Seriously. You’re allowed to move for joy, not just fitness goals.
