Why Doing Nothing Is Sometimes the Best Self-Care

Let’s be honest – summer can sometimes feel like a weird in-between time. No deadlines, no morning lectures, and suddenly, even relaxing can feel like something you’re supposed to do “right.”

If you’re like me, you’ve probably had days where doing nothing has made you feel kind of guilty. You might even ask yourself, “Shouldn’t I be learning something? Or exercising? Or at least cleaning my room?” But here’s the truth: sometimes, rest without any reason is exactly what your mind and body needs.

After months of always being on-the-go, doing nothing is the perfect chance to reset your nervous system, quit the million mental tabs, and just exist. It’s not about being lazy – it's about making space for your mind to breathe. While it might sound counterintuitive, doing nothing can actually make you feel more energized, clear-headed, and creative over time!

So, what does “nothing” look like in practice? That's the best part – it’s different for everyone! For some, nothing looks like lying in bed without looking at a screen, for others, it's people watching at the park, or staring out the window during a car ride like you're the main character in a movie.

Still not sure how to do "nothing" without feeling restless? Start small:

  1. Pick one afternoon in the week to have no plans. No goals, no productivity pressure. Just see where your energy takes you!

  2. Schedule 15-20 minutes a day unplugged: no phone, no music, no tasks. Let your thoughts wander wherever they want.

  3. Notice how you feel afterward.  If guilt creeps in, remind yourself that rest isn’t earned, it’s essential.

Doing nothing may not feel productive, but that’s the point. We’re not machines. We’re people – human beings. This summer, give yourself permission to pause. You might be surprised at how much you can grow just by simply being still.
