ON & OFF CAMPUS FOOD ACCESS RESOURCES

This section provides a list of free or inexpensive food access resources for students both on campus, and in the Kingston community.

We have created an interactive map so that you can easily access information on where to get food, purchase food with discounts, and much more! We encourage students to look into the services offered prior to accessing them, as these resources are primarily intended for students who are struggling to access affordable food. Also included, is a map of spaces on campus that offer microwave access.

The Roots of Food Insecurity

It is important to highlight that food insecurity is rooted in poverty and a lack of adequate income.

The primary causes of the obstacles related to affordability and accessibility can be traced back to underlying structural factors such as:

  • Poverty

  • Unemployment/under-employment

  • Inadequate social assistance

  • The elevated cost of living (housing, utilities, phone/internet, transportation, tuition, groceries, etc.)

In addition, language barriers, uncertainties around available support/lack of support in the community, and the stigma attached to utilizing food banks can also contribute to the issue of food insecurity. Therefore, we aim to promote the services that are available to Queen's students to help alleviate any stressors with regard to food access.
