Prescription Exercise at Queen’s (PE-Q) Program: Using Physical Activity to Improve your Mental Health

To address the importance of student well-being, Student Wellness Services has collaborated with Athletics and Recreation to form the Prescription Exercise at Queen’s (PE-Q) program. The PE-Q program is a unique, research-backed program designed to help Queen’s University students use physical activity as a tool for improving mental health.

PE-Q is a 4-to-6-week referral-only program tailored specifically for students experiencing mild to moderate anxiety or depression. Countless studies have shown that regular physical activity can reduce stress, improve sleep, increase focus and even enhance academic performance. Since its inception in 2017, the program has supported over 300 students by providing the resources needed to make physical activity an enjoyable and sustainable part of everyday life.

The program includes four free 60-minute personal training sessions which will be tailored to your fitness level and interests. In addition, you will be matched with a Peer Wellness Coach who will help you set achievable goals, track your progress, and help build confidence while transitioning to independent exercise. PE-Q also offers resources such as group fitness sessions or personalized workout design sessions to embed these fitness habits for the long-term.

You can get involved by booking a PE-Q referral appointment or asking about the program during a medical, mental health, or accessibility appointment at Student Wellness Services. Whether you’re looking to lift your mood, manage stress, or just feel more energized, PE-Q is here to help you take that first step towards a healthier, happier you!
