Supporting Graduate Students: The SGPS & GCS Sponsors Fresh Food Box Program

In an exciting collaboration aimed at supporting graduate students, the Society of Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) and the Graduate Computing Society (GCS) are teaming up to sponsor Health Promotion’s Fresh Food Box program.

Health Promotion started the Fresh Food Box program in 2019 which offers all the necessary ingredients to make a fresh and simple recipe of 4-6 servings. In this iteration for graduate students, three Fresh Food Box programs will be offered  in May, June, and July.  Health Promotion’s fantastic student staff help choose the recipe, acquire the ingredients, and pack the boxes, making it truly a “for students, by students” initiative. Health Promotion will continue to run Fresh Food Boxes for the SGPS in the fall & winter and dates will be released at the end of the summer.

Participation is easy and flexible. Students can register online for one box at a time up to a week in advance for each session. This approach ensures students can plan ahead while reaching a larger audience of students.

Although this collaboration provides additional food access options for graduate students, it is also about empowering students to gain the skills and knowledge to cook affordable, healthy, and quick meals. By showcasing budget-friendly recipes and meal ideas, the program equips students with practical tools they can apply when meal planning in the future.

Health Promotion is grateful for the sponsorship and the SGPS & GCS for prioritizing the graduate student community’s health and well-being. As we navigate through these challenging times, initiatives like the Fresh Food Box program remind us of the power of collaboration and community support. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive academically and personally.
